SPAN 395: Reflective Narrative
This course was the preparation for capstone. I spent a whole semester in activities that helped me prepared for the final semester. We worked on our topic, we learned how to use the search engines in the internet, and we had conversations with the librarian. During this semester I chose my capstone topic. I decided that it would be a good idea to explore the figure of the landholder (terrateniente, cacique or hacendado) in the Mexican Revolution era and how this figure was represented in literature. My professor suggested to me to read Balún Canan and Pedro Paramo to see what model of landholder I wanted to use. I decided that the second one was perfect for my capstone purpose. As a class, we discussed with some teachers how to do research on our topics; also, we received some presentations from the librarian to understand all the basic features of the web search. Our professor gave us rules and advice about how to do our evaluation of sources, and we did some presentations to show what our progress in our investigations.
During this semester we had the opportunity to know many of the students that were preparing their capstone presentations. We shared ideas, search strategies, books that could be helpful for our topics, and encouragement with each other to do our best. Once we finished this semester, we were a step ahead to complete our capstone project. We only needed to put together all the pieces and be prepared to develop our last documents in the capstone class.
I consider that this course is really important for those that are going to do their capstone project. I had the experience in the Mathematics department, where I did my capstone in only one semester, and that was too much pressure for the student. You need weeks just to choose your topic, and many other days to develop it. During that semester of pre-capstone we have the chance to set down all that we need, and once we are in the capstone class, we only need to work hard to put everything in place.
