MLO 6: Reflective Narrative
To complete this MLO, we took two significant courses SPAN 395: Special Topics (Capstone Prep & Research) and WLC 400: WLC Major Capstone. In these courses, we learned how to use different web based tools to search sources on a particular topic. We learned how to evaluate those sources and find the most reliable information to use in our research project, which was a portfolio. We wrote a capstone paper, created a power point, and develop a presentation to an audience about one particular topic related with the Hispanic Heritage Culture or Linguistics. My topic was focused in Pedro Páramo, a novel by the Mexican writer Juan Rulfo. I focused my investigation on the figure of the landholder (terrateniente, cacique o hacendado), its origins and how literature portrays this historic character. The main character in Rulfo’s novel was a landholder, and that is the reason that my investigation was focused on his novel. The challenge to fulfill this requirement is to be familiar with the use of online sources and understand the principles of evaluating sources; however, the advisors in this class helped us find strategies of evaluation and gave us the technical support to find the information that we were looking for. It was a great experience to be a researcher of a topic that I am interested in, and I learned many new strategies to search for information about any subject.
