SPAN 305: REFLECTIVE NARRATIVE
This course has the goal to introduce the student into the world of official documents for many of the professions around the world. The students learn how to deal with a variety of different forms that are necessary in the professional world and how to create those forms in the correct way in Spanish.
During the course we learned how to write letters, business cards, resumes, biographies and many other useful documents that we will need if we decide to work in a Spanish speaking country. We made a portfolio that helped us to keep all those forms and have them when we need to use them. All these documents were reviewed by our classmates, and then we corrected the paper based on the observations, and finally we stored them in our portfolio. The correction activity helped us to learn different styles of writing from our classmates and gave us a great variety of ideas about how to write and create those documents during our professional lives. We learned how different the documents are in different countries in Latin America, and also the differences between them and the official documents in countries with a different language; then we were assigned to do a search of different countries and create a presentation about the particularities of their forms.
We had drills with our classmates, creating imaginary scenarios to practice the use of our Spanish language, such as interviews, presentations and interaction with coworkers. The interviews were led by our teacher and he asked us questions related to the work we wanted to do in our future and about our personality. Then we heard suggestions from our professor and our classmates and we took note about on all their important advice that will help us in our professional careers. During the scenarios, we practice our Spanish pronunciation and the correct use of verbs.
We also learned about how the workers socialize in the Spanish speaking countries and about the appropriate manners to behave in a work environment. It is important for a professional worker to understand the culture of the country where he is working. That’s why we researched about how professional people socialize during and after work, and we watched some videos to be familiar with those customs.
Spanish For The Professions is a great course that helps students understand and be familiar with many Spanish speaking countries. This class introduces the world of professionalism to the student and prepares him/her to be ready for a world of opportunities. This is a highly recommended course for those who are planning to work in a Spanish speaking country.
