WLC 400: WLC Major Capstone
This is the course where we do our main research project. This project is divided in many different parts. First of all, we need to write a paper with a topic related to our major. In my case I needed to analyze some themes from one piece of literature. I chose The Figure of the Landholder in the novel of Juan Rulfo: Pedro Páramo. I am writing a novel where two families of landholders dominated a region and I consider it important to know more about this character. In addition to my personal purpose, I considered that it was necessary for the reader to understand the complex image of the landholder that has been presented in literature and decide if this figure is accurate in comparison with the figure that appears in the history books. The most challenging part is to find the sources that support my points, but after many days of hard work, I accomplished this objective.
The second part of our project is to do a presentation about of search. We create a power-point in English and develop our presentation in the language we studied, which was Spanish. The presentation explains the purpose of our research paper, what we learned during this project, and our conclusion. We cite some of our sources to reinforce our opinions and points of view, and we spent time with our audience after the presentation to tell our experience in capstone.
This is a very challenging class because students work at their own pace and are responsible for fulfilling all the requirements that the course asks. The professors are only advisors and only offer guidance. They are not asking us for weekly results since we need to prove that we are ready for the real world job industry where we must work with responsibility. As a student I learned that we need to be very mature when taking this course because if we don’t have a working plan, we will feel a lot of pressure during the last days. That is why I strongly recommend taking the pre-capstone course before this class; however, it was a great experience to work professionally on a topic that I really love.
