MLO 3: Reflective Narrative
This MLO was the one that required the most work. Since my focus was literature, I was required to take six courses to fulfill the requirements. The courses that I took: Span 306: Culture/ Civilization of Spanish Latin America; Span 307: History and Politics of Mexico; Span 308: History and Culture Aztlán: SW US; Span 321: Masterpieces of Hispanic Literature: Spain; Span 365: The Chicano Novel; and Span 397: Independent Study: Mexican Literature.
These courses helped me understand the ideology, beliefs, attitudes, values and philosophies of different Spanish speaking cultures. I read many pieces of literature where the writers express the feelings of their cultures and describe the life styles of their countries.
The classes about history and were intense journeys through time to discover every cultural origin and understand, by analyzing their past, the expression that they have in our present. We analyzed history, religion, tradition, customs, and social and government structures. All these features gave us an idea about the different historical stages of some countries in Latin America.
The focus of the literature classes was to analyze the differences in the written styles among writers and chronological eras. The written communication has been one of the most essential pieces of every culture, and by analyzing their literature we can have a good idea about the culture in the regions where a piece was written. We analyzed story plots, characters, themes, settings and structure to understand deeply the message that these stories want to transmit to the reader.
Also, we were able to watch documentaries, films, and expositions that gave us an idea about the different cultures that we were studying. We had the opportunity to explore different cultural idiosyncrasies through the countries’ history, and understand how society and human mind have evolved together. We learned during these courses how every country is different and how their manifestation of art, literature, and music are important components of every unique cultural identity.
